woke up this morning and DECIDED that i am making changes. changes? yes. i tend to spoil everyone else all the time. it's what i do and it's what makes me happy, but part of that involves putting myself second... why? cos i never spoil myself.

time to make a few changes.

i need routine. no, not drill sergeant you-have-to-be-in-bed-by-eight type of stuff, but focusing on myself and what i want in life. if you're constantly putting yourself second, then how in the world do you think you'll be able to EVER get what you really want?

today's to do list: hearts, new moleskine collection, clean-up! get rid of clutter that keeps you from moving forward (yes, it can be old magazines too).

for this step, i use a loose definition of “divine” … you don’t have to be religious to find divinity in something. when mozart wrote a symphony, or jobs created the macbook air, or a stranger smiles at you, there is divinity in that. there’s divinity in a sunset, in every living thing (why i’m a vegan), in a cool breeze on a humid day.

you just need to recognize the inspiration, in whatever form it comes.

here are my greatest sources of inspiration:
people doing great things.
things of great beauty.
nature.
music.
the written word: books, magazines, blogs.
people in your life.
love, in any form.
yourself, doing anything good, no matter how tiny...

"ways to successfully ingrain a behavior" - read this article a while ago, but went back to read it again today. thought i'd share a few points with you, but you should definitely read the full article by leo babauta (zenhabits).

keep it simple

do just one habit at a time.
start small.
do a 30-day challenge.
write it down.
make a plan.
know your motivations, and be sure they’re strong. write them down in your plan.
don’t start right away. in your plan, write down a start date.
write down all your obstacles.
identify your triggers. what situations trigger your current habit?
for every single trigger, identify a positive habit you’re going to do instead. some positive habits could include: exercise, meditation, deep breathing, organizing, decluttering, and more.
plan a support system.
ask for help.
become aware of self-talk.
stay positive.
have strategies to defeat the urge.
prepare for the sabotagers.
talk to yourself.
have a mantra. when i wanted to quit my day job, it was “liberate yourself”. this is just a way to remind yourself of what you’re trying to do.
use visualization. this is powerful.
have rewards. regular ones.
take it one urge at a time.
not one puff ever (in other words, no exceptions).
get rest.
drink lots of water.
renew your commitment often. remind yourself of your commitment.
set up public accountability. blog about it.
engineer it so it’s hard to fail.
avoid some situations where you normally do your old habit, at least for awhile, to make it a bit easier on yourself.
if you fail, figure out what went wrong, plan for it, and try again.

dear jordan,

if you are reading this book, it means that we got through the sorrowful years, somehow, and that you are old enough to understand all that i am about to tell you.

you are just ten months old now, but i am writing this for the young man you will be. by then, you will know that your father was a highly decorated soldier who was killed in combat in october 2006, when a bomb exploded beneath his armored vehicle in iraq. you were six months old.

you will know that he left a journal for you, more than two hundred pages long, which he handwrote in neat block letters in that hot, terrifying place. what i want to tell you is how the journal came to be and what it leaves unsaid about your father and our abiding love.

before he kissed my swollen stomach and left for the war in december 2005, your father, u.s. army first sergeant charles monroe king, had been preparing for the promise of your new life and for the possible end of his own. even before he boarded that plane headed for danger, i worried that he would be killed. so i gave him a journal. i hoped he would write a few messages, perhaps some words of encouragement to you, though you were not yet born, in case he died before you knew each other...
